Do not fear to be eccentric in opinion, for every opinion now accepted was once eccentric.

If we can’t bring ourselves to say what’s in our hearts when it truly matters then we’ve already given up our freedom and with it the freedom of future generations. Which is something that we got no right to do. We didn’t earn this freedom. It was handed to us on a plate by people who did earn it with their lives. We don’t own it. We’re the custodians of it. It’s not ours to give away.

Principes als tolerantie, democratie, rechtvaardigheid, persoonlijke vrijheid en vrijheid van meningsuiting kunnen slechts worden verdedigd door mensen die begrijpen wat deze principes betekenen, hoe ze ontstaan en ontwikkeld zijn en waarom ze van belang zijn.

‘Freedom, prosperity and the development of society and of individuals are fundamental values. They will only be attained through the ability of well informed citizens to exercise their democratic rights and to play an active role in society. Constructive participation and the development of democracy depend on satisfactory education as well as on free and unlimited access to knowledge, thought, culture and information’.

Wanneer woorden hun betekenis verliezen en mensen niet over voldoende woorden beschikken om hun gedachten uit te kunnen drukken kunnen zij niet alleen niet meer spreken maar ook niet meer denken.

Het nut van een opvatting is zelf een kwestie van opvatting; even betwistbaar, even vatbaar voor twijfel, en evenzeer discussie vereisend, als die opvatting zelf.

1. Niemand heeft voorafgaand verlof nodig om door de drukpers gedachten of gevoelens te openbaren, behoudens ieders verantwoordelijkheid volgens de wet.

2. De wet stelt regels omtrent radio en televisie. Er is geen voorafgaand toezicht op de inhoud van een radio- of televisieuitzending.

I think we ought always to entertain our opinions with some measure of doubt. I shouldn’t wish people dogmatically to believe any philosophy, not even mine.

If whatever we do can be held against us years later, if all our impulsive comments are preserved, they can easily be combined into a composite picture of ourselves. Afraid how our words and actions may be perceived years later and taken out of context, the lack of forgetting may prompt us speak less freely and openly.
